Only one casket spray is used

It is the arrangement that lies on the casket itself, and there is one at a service. By long custom it comes from the immediate family — a spouse, the children, or the parents — as a single arrangement on behalf of them all, which is why families usually settle it between themselves in one phone call.

You do not need to be there when it arrives. It goes to the funeral home, and the staff set it in place before the family comes in.

If you are not immediate family

Friends, colleagues, neighbours and extended family usually choose a standing spray, a wreath or a plant. These can be placed beside the casket or at the entrance.

Half-couch or full-couch

These two words come up once in most people’s lives, usually at the worst possible moment. They describe the casket, not the flowers, and all they decide is how long the spray needs to be. That is the whole of it.

Half-couch

The casket is open for viewing

The upper half of the lid stays open through the visitation, so the spray rests on the closed lower half. This is the usual arrangement at an American funeral, and it is what most casket sprays are built for.

Full-couch

The casket stays closed

With the lid closed for the whole service, the spray lies along the full length of it, so the piece is longer and takes more flowers. Families choose a closed casket for many reasons, and there is nothing unusual about it.

If you do not know which

Ask the funeral director. They know, and they are asked this every day. If you would rather not ask, say so in the order notes and we will size the spray for a half-couch casket, which is the more common of the two.

Inserts and smaller tributes12

$74.99 – $164.99

Casket inserts, pillows, garlands and rosaries are placed in or beside the casket rather than on top of it, and they are smaller and cost less for that reason. None of them is a substitute for the spray. They are listed here because they share the casket category, and because a family who has already settled the spray sometimes adds one — a grandchild’s piece, or a rosary.

Matching sets3

$579.99 – $939.99

A casket spray with companion pieces cut from the same flowers for elsewhere in the room. One order, one delivery. This is worth it only if the family is covering several pieces together — a single spray is complete on its own.

Questions families ask

How many casket sprays does a funeral need?
One. A single spray rests on the casket, and it is traditionally given by the immediate family together — a spouse, the children, or the parents. Families normally agree on one arrangement between them rather than each sending their own.
Who is supposed to send the casket spray?
The immediate family. If you are a friend, a colleague, a neighbor or extended family, the piece for you is a standing spray, a wreath or a plant, which is displayed beside the casket or at the entrance rather than on it.
What is the difference between a half-couch and a full-couch casket spray?
A half-couch spray rests on the closed lower half of the casket while the upper half is open for viewing, which is the usual arrangement at an American funeral. A full-couch spray lies along the full length of a casket that stays closed for the whole service, so it is longer and takes more flowers.
What if I do not know whether the casket will be open or closed?
Ask the funeral director. They know, and they are asked this every day. If you would rather not ask, say so in the order notes and we will size the spray for a half-couch casket, which is the more common of the two.
Can the spray be delivered straight to the funeral home?
Yes. We need the funeral home name, its street address, and the name of the deceased as it appears in the obituary, because funeral homes hold several services at once and route arrangements by that name.
How late can I order for delivery today?
Orders placed by 2:00 PM recipient local time, Monday to Saturday, are delivered the same day. The arrangement is made on the day of delivery, and delivery is free with no service fees.
