Still alive in March, when that week’s flowers have gone.

What to write on the card

250 characters, and no idea what to put in them

Sorted by relationship, because that decides what a card can honestly say. Change the bracketed names, then paste.

Four rules that do the work

  1. 01Use their name

“Sorry for your loss” is addressed to nobody. “Thinking of Rosa” is.

  2. 02Place yourself

They may read forty cards. A street or a workplace places you.

  3. 03Give, do not ask

“Let me know if you need anything” leaves them asking.

  4. 04Short is not cold

Three careful lines beat a straining paragraph.

A colleague

  • With sympathy from your team at [company]. Everything here is covered until you are back.

    89/250 characters
  • You may not know me — I worked alongside [name] for nine years. He talked about all of you.

    91/250 characters
  • From everyone in the [department] office. Call [your name] on [phone] if your family needs anything.

    100/250 characters

Sign with the team, not first names alone.

A neighbor

  • So sorry about [name]. The bins and the front path are ours this week. — number [12]

    84/250 characters
  • With love from the [surname]s across the street. Dinner will be on your porch on Thursday.

    90/250 characters
  • Thinking of [name], who waved at our children every morning for six years. — the family at [14]

    95/250 characters

Sign with your house number, not your surname.

A close friend

  • I loved [name] too. I am not going to try to make this better. I will call on Sunday.

    85/250 characters
  • Thinking about [name]’s terrible jokes today, and about you. I will be at the house Saturday with food.

    103/250 characters
  • No words, and nothing here to answer. I am here for the long part of this. — [name]

    83/250 characters

First name only.

A distant relative

  • So sorry about Uncle [name]. We did not see him often, but we heard about [his garden] every Christmas.

    103/250 characters
  • You may not know me — I am [name]’s cousin on his mother’s side. We are thinking of you.

    88/250 characters
  • With sympathy from the [surname] family in [city]. We are sorry we cannot be there this week.

    93/250 characters

Surname and town: “the Okonjos in Duluth”.

Four lines to leave out

Anything starting with “at least”
“At least it was quick” corrects how they feel.
“She is in a better place”
A belief they may not share, at the worst moment.
“Be strong”
It asks them to perform for you.
“I know exactly how you feel”
Even when true, a card is not where it lands.

Questions people ask before sending

Should I send sympathy flowers to the home or to the funeral home?

To the home when the flowers are for the family: the service has passed, it is private, or the notice asked for donations instead of chapel flowers. To the funeral home when the arrangement must be in the room during the service.

What do I write if I did not know the person who died?

Say honestly what you did know, and say who you are. Naming your connection — a workplace, a street, a branch of the family — matters more than perfect words.

Is it too late to send sympathy flowers?

No. The week after the service, when the visitors stop and the house goes quiet, is the most under-used moment to send — as are one month on, and the anniversary.

Can sympathy flowers be delivered today?

Order by 2:00 PM recipient local time, Monday to Saturday, and same-day arrangements are delivered today. 20 of the 70 here are same-day; the rest arrive on the date you choose at checkout.

What if nobody is home when the flowers arrive?

Add the recipient’s phone number at checkout, and use the delivery instructions box for a gate code or a neighbor. If the family is away for the service, choose a later date.
